Roswell is a city of historic origin that is reaching for the promise of the future. Founded on the banks of the Chattahoochee River in 1839, Roswell was long the ideal southern town. A variety of entertainment is available including Orchestra Atlanta and Georgia Ensemble Theater at the Roswell Cultural Arts Center. Its historic sites, award-winning parks system and Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area make Roswell an excellent choice for leisure activities.

Roswell’s Historic District offers 640 acres of vintage homes, historic sites, museums, monuments, churches and cemeteries, with 122 acres of area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Begin your explorations at the Historic Roswell Visitors Center where you will enjoy a video of the area, view some exhibits, and receive printed materials and information. The Visitors Center is located at the intersection of Atlanta Street (Hwy. 9) and Sloan Street, in the Town Square area.

The town is located on the northern banks of the Chattahoochee River in an area the Cherokee Indians once called "Enchanted Land". Originally, whites were forbidden on the land that was inhabited by the Cherokees, but that law was often ignored. Many difficulties would arise, and although a variety of treaties would be signed, many were broken.

The Cherokee became increasingly aware of the white-man's powerful weapons and the great numbers of settlers flocking to the area. Moreover, they realized that they must learn to co-exist with the white man or their way of life would surely perish.
